Necklaces are undoubtedly a big love of mine, as most outfits aren’t complete if I don’t top them off with a statement piece. I’m happy to skip nearly all other types of jewellery in order to let my necklaces reign.
I attribute this affection for necklaces to the influence of my Grandmother and her love of bold jewellery. She taught me to never fear oversized more dramatic pieces for everyday wear. She would often wear tasteful, simple styles of clothing and let the accessories she wore jazz up her outfits.
My necklace collection is comprised mainly of costume pieces that I’ve found while hunting for treasures at antique shops and thrift stores. Which allows me to acquire guilt-free. Although I am still decerning with what I purchase as I try to find unique and interesting gems.
Since I tend to buy older necklaces, on occasion, after some wear, strings break. I have made a habit of fixing them myself, especially when it’s a piece that I love.
One ordinary day, with my head down repairing a few strands I started thinking about making necklaces myself.
My decision to try out this art form, which is still in an experimental stage, is also to create pieces with an aesthetic that feels true to me. So my necklaces are multi-stringed and colourful.
Most of the elements I use are up-cycled beads from necklaces found at second-hand stores, along with precious gems or stones, which I find irresistible; combining high and low. I like the thought of taking a boring necklace apart and trying to work it into something that is exciting and new.
I’ve embraced plastic beads, regardless of plastic being a frowned upon material. I find them colourful and light. When placed in a particular form, they can also be beautiful.
I have added some designs to my online shop and am open to feedback because this is new to me and it’s always great to know what people think.
Enjoy!
